♦ Biol. Genre de bactéries aérobies (rhizobiacées), vivant en symbiose dans les nodules des racines de légumineuses et assurant la fixation d'azote de ces plantes.

● rhizobium nom masculin Bactérie fixatrice d'azote atmosphérique vivant en symbiose sur les racines des légumineuses où elle forme des nodosités. (L'introduction d'une telle légumineuse dans l'assolement permet d'enrichir en azote les sols cultivés.)
